TLD-OPS at ICANN81 Ransomware Table Top Exercise

Dear all, On Sunday November 10, 2024, the TLD-OPS group will host a Business Continuity / Disaster Recovery Table Top Exercise (TTX). Building upon a similar exercise held at ICANN 66 in 2019, and the recent CENTR Jamboree Joint Crisis Management exercise in May 2024, our goal is to develop capacity in ccTLDs to effectively conduct TTXs and enhance their overall resilience. We are seeking in-person ccTLD participants who will be at the ICANN81 meeting in Istanbul to be a part of this exercise. We are seeking a cross section of participants from sales & marketing, legal, communications, technical, executives or general management, to ensure that the exercise is of value to all participants. If you have a role in any of these areas, will be in Istanbul in person for ICANN81, and are interested in an exercise that will provide the knowledge and skills to help build your own Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plans, please let us know. Participants will collaborate with colleagues from other TLDs and with a mix of roles and responsibilities for an educational and fun experience that you can bring back to your home organization to help build your own Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plans from. Participants will be assigned to groups and will participate in up to 5 rounds of this dynamic table top exercise. The TTX will be held in person during Block 3 & 4 (Sunday, 10 November 2024, 13:15-16:00 local time). A maximum of 60 participants can be accommodated. Dear All, This is a reminder to participate in the DNS Abuse survey. The survey closes tomorrow, Friday 13 September 2024. For more details, including the link to the survey, see the announcement here: https://ccnso.icann.org/en/announcements/announcement-09aug24-en.htm Nick Wenban-Smith, DASC Chair, explains why all ccTLD managers should seriously consider participating in this survey: “Firstly, the DASC was set up to enable the ccTLD community to take the initiative on DNS Abuse related issues. You will recall that previously other parts of the community (usual suspects) were attempting to fill this void and pedalling unhelpful (if not downright inaccurate) information about what ccTLDs were (or were not) doing to combat DNS Abuse. Giving us collateral to present positively and proactively on the topic helps us to keep hold of the agenda and stop others from overstepping their boundaries. As we saw from the first survey data in 2022, this was very successful. Secondly, as you have already stated, the ccTLDs actually have a really strong position on DNS Abuse from which to speak. But we need to go out on the front foot and advocate for ourselves, no-one else is going to do it for us. You can see from the wider community discussion topics that this is a high interest area, especially from governments and regulators. It is in our own self-interest to highlight our strengths and therefore to preserve our independence as ccTLDs from potential unwelcome external governance, regulation and censorship. It is always a real pleasure to be able to state that observed abuse levels in ccTLDs are generally 10x less than gTLDs for example. Finally, as the survey authors we were well-aware that there may be some questions that ccTLD managers are not comfortable answering, even though the survey responses are only presented in anonymised aggregate data sets. And that is perfectly fine. For this reason the questions are pretty much all optional, you don't have to answer any questions which (for whatever reasons) you do not wish to answer.” Thank you. In accordance with the SOPC Charter, the Committee may, as part of its activities, take a position on its own behalf and/or provide input to the requests for comments and subsequently report back to ICANN or other supporting organisations and advisory committees. Therefore, the views expressed in this submission are those of the SOPC only. They are not necessarily those of the ccNSO (Council and/or its members), nor of the ccTLD community at large, nor of individual ccTLD managers. ABOUT THE DRAFT STRATEGIC PLAN AND OPERATING PLAN FRAMEWORK | The draft ICANN Strategic Plan outlines the specific strategic objectives, goals, and strategies for fiscal years 2026–2030, and it informs the draft Operating Plan Framework. The draft Strategic Plan contains four strategic objectives, each accompanied by strategic goals to further these objectives. It then outlines specific strategies to achieve these goals. Additionally, the plan features progress indicators to define what will enable the ICANN community to assess the success in achieving those strategies, as well as strategic risks. The five-year Operating Plan Framework is designed to outline the high-level activities necessary to effectively execute the five-year Strategic Plan. It details the key actions and initiatives that ICANN will undertake over the next five years to achieve its strategic objectives. The specific details of prioritization and resource allocation will be defined during the annual Operating Plan and Budget process. ICANN org will publish a detailed draft FY26–30 Operating and Financial Plan and an FY26 Operating Plan and Budget for Public Comment in December 2024.
