ADOBE CONNECT - WHAT NEXT?

As you know, the ICANN organization took down its Adobe Connect service midway through the ICANN61 meeting in response to reported issues<https://www.icann.org/news/blog/issues-with-adobe-connect-at-icann61> with this service. Concurrently, we began to conduct our own forensic analysis of the reported incident and began working with our Adobe cloud service provider, CoSo Cloud LLC, and through them with Adobe to learn more. Shortly thereafter, we rolled out instances of Zoom and WebEx for the community to support remote participation (RP) and collaboration. Here's where we are now: The Forensics Investigation With respect to our forensics work, we received application logfiles from CoSo Cloud, going back for a period of one year. ICANN Engineering and Security teams have examined these application log files and the results of our investigation clearly show "fingerprints of incursion" by the researcher who reported the issue. We were unable to find any other indication that anyone else either identified or exploited this issue. Thanks to the person who found the bug again. Working closely with CoSo Cloud, we were able to recreate the reported issue, and understand the conditions required to trigger it. This information has been communicated to Adobe, and Adobe is working on a software fix to address the root cause of the issue. We have also been working with CoSo on options to re-enable Adobe Connect in the shorter term. We have determined there are two viable paths to accomplish this goal. They are: 1. Deploy a hardened configuration to eliminate "man-in-the-middle" exploitations by encrypting relevant traffic, or 2. Implement a programmatic fix from CoSo Cloud to substantially reduce the window during which the issue can be exploited. With respect to the first option, we attempted to hack the hardened configuration in a test environment last week, and were not able to do so over the course of 7 hours. Separately, CoSo Cloud and Adobe conducted similar tests and confirmed that this configuration is protected from exploitation of the issue. Community Feedback and Next Steps For the last three weeks, we have been gathering limited feedback regarding users' experiences with WebEx and Zoom. So far, we have input from about 200 people, including ICANN org meeting organizers and the ICANN community. Our analysis of this feedback indicates a desire to revert back to an Adobe Connect, providing the security of the service is ensured. Accordingly, we would like to propose the following plan to the broader community for consideration: 1. We would like to restore Adobe Connect services with both the new hardened configuration and the programmatic fix discussed above. Our intent would be to restore service by 3 May. This would allow us to use Adobe Connect during several upcoming events including the Board Workshop, the GDD Industry Summit, and ICANN62. 2. Once Adobe releases a new version of the software with a fix for this issue from their perspective, and provides assurance the update has been adequately tested, we will move toward that release of Adobe Connect in a prudent manner, with the help of CoSo Cloud. We believe that this approach will ensure the security of our content, and of our community interactions, while also enabling our community to use the collaboration tools of their choice. The CSC Charter Review Team’s Initial Report is now out for public comments

Dear all, The CSC Charter Review Team’s Initial Report is now out for public comments The Customer Standing Committee (CSC) was established on 1 October 2016 and has been operating in accordance with a Charter that was developed by the Cross Community Working Group IANA Transition (CWG). The ICANN Bylaws (section 17.3) and CSC Charter include a provision that the first review of the Charter of the CSC needs to be conducted one year after the first meeting of the CSC. The CSC Charter Review Team seeks comments and input on its findings and proposed amendment of the CSC Charter, as included in its Initial Report. Based on public hearing of the direct customers, community members, PTI Board, the CSC itself and the former PTI president, the RT proposed changes to the charter, including: • The ability for CSC and PTI to agree on minor changes to the Service Levels without the need to go through an extensive public comment process, and • An arrangement to deal with changing circumstances of appointed members. In addition the charter will reflect that CSC and PTI have agreed on a remedial action procedure (a formal escalation methodology) in case of poor performance of PTI. For decision The Board requested the ccNSO to look into the use of Emoji as Second level domains as currently some ccTLDs allow registration (for example see: http://domainincite.com/22575-emojis-coming-to-another-cctld ). Related, is the need to ensure that the Fast Track Implementation Plan and the overall IDN ccTLD policy refer to the IDNA 2008 suite and its successor, to avoid misunderstanding about the use of Emoji. Following the Board request the Council initially adopted the terms of Reference for a Study Group. After the presentations and discussions on the topic at Tech Day and de ccNSO Meeting days in San Juan, Council deferred a decision on a call for volunteers to its next (this) meeting. Purpose of Emoji Study Group is to provide to ccTLD community, the ccNSO Council a comprehensive overview of the issues associated with the use of Emoji as second level domains, and the need for and current practice by ccTLD managers to allow Emojis as second level domains. If considered appropriate by the Study group, the Study group may advise on a course of further actions, if any. 8) Update SSR 2 Informational 9) Special Elections European Region For Decision. Nigel Roberts indicated he will step down from his position as a Councillor by the end of the Panama meeting. His regular term would end in March 2020. As a result, the members in the EU region need to elect a new member to the ccNSO Council for the remainder of his period (until March 2020). Follow-up discussion meeting January and February 2018 on timing of election process: 2 scenarios and there implications. Depending on the preferred timeframe, the Council may need to appoint the Election Manager and adopt timeline for Special Election European Region at this meeting. 10) PDP Retirement Informational. The CSC Review team expects to complete its work by the Panama meeting and submit its final report to the ccNSO and GNSO. As the Review Team proposes amendments to the charter of the CSC, the ccNSO and GNSO jointly need to adopt the changes each according to their own rules and procedures. 13.3 Upcoming CSC members Selection process For Informational purposes Timeline and expected role of the Council 13.4 Overlap CSC Effectiveness review and first IANA Function Review For information and decision. According to the ICANN Bylaws (section 17.3) and current charter of the CSC the CSC Effectiveness will need to be reviewed starting 1 October 2018 and the ccNSO and GNSO are tasked to determine the method of this review. At or around the same time the first IANA Function Review (IFR) will commence. This review is defined in the ICANN Bylaws (Article 18). The IFR should, among others, look at how the CSC has performed its oversight role. As the CSC Charter Review Team has noted “There is concern about the potential burden that these simultaneous reviews could place on the CSC, as well as the real possibility of significant overlap of the two reviews. The RT recommends that the ccNSO and GNSO Councils conduct an analysis of the requirements of the reviews with a view to creating synergies and avoiding overlap.” The GNSO Council has appointed a small team (Donna Austin and Phillipe Fouquart) to coordinate next steps with ccNSO. For discussion and decision: does the Council wish to appoint a small group to coordinate actions and prepare decision-making pertaining to the different topics around the CSC?
